Remote management of industrial and residential doors in order to reduce maintenance costs

One of the main problems faced by manufacturers of industrial, commercial and residential doors is the number of complaints they receive from customers due to doors not working or getting stuck to the point that they can’t access their business or home.

Even worse, the causes of these incidents are unknown. Maintenance involves sending a technician to perform a number of tests in order to progressively eliminate possible causes. The operator is sometimes required to travel long distances, which increases the cost and time associated with finding the source of the malfunction.

But what if the door could talk to them and explain how it works, how to use it, how to improve performance and what its life cycle is?

Obtaining this information would avoid unnecessary operational costs associated with proactive and performance maintenance of the door. It would also allow anomalies to be detected and reduce the time and cost associated with a technician’s testing process by facilitating remote control of the operation.

Also, with remotely accessible information and management, technicians can use our Internet of Things (IoT) platform to make decisions and improve the quality of the service they offer to their customers.

IoT is being implemented in the industry under the name Industry 4.0. It’s generating important differential competitive advantages by customizing and enhancing the performance of products.

Proactive and predictive maintenance

If you’re looking to stand out, it’s not enough to manufacture a door and deliver it to the end customer. One significant competitive advantage is having access to information anytime and from anywhere—from detailed door maintenance updates, such as if the motor needs greasing after a certain number of cycles, to how many times each element has been used (and whether it’s being used correctly). IoT also lets service providers retrieve vital data to prevent malfunctions, create alerts when anomalies occur, remotely update firmware or configurations, etc.

The inventory of all the elements of an installed door can be obtained automatically and includes information about which pieces may need to be replaced. This lets manufacturers make better use of factory space based on when each piece needs to be repaired or replaced.

To simplify operations, you can easily set parameters that add the most value to your business, such as a number of cycles, temperature, engine vibration, RPM, etc. You can add more parameters as your business grows.

Field performance

The tool reduces the need for field maintenance by anticipating malfunctions and their causes before correcting them remotely. If travel is necessary, it provides accurate information about the reason for the failure.

This periodic statistical information about doors’ operation is necessary in order to improve the after-sales network and reduce customer complaints.

A powerful network of distributors

The information generated by remote management can be monetized by selling it to distributors and commercial agents that offer a more advanced service so they have a report of incidents, facilities and door use in order to see which perform best over the year.

Adding sensors to doors allows the manufacturer—specifically its R&D department—to use certain information to improve the quality of the product.

It also acts as a consultant, since it collects and stores data for the time requested and bills for the maintenance of the doors over that time period.

In the event of an audit or accident, it gives companies a data history for the customer and quickly and easily extracts the required reports.

More personalized service for each customer

With the help of this tool, the end customer will receive more advanced and personalized service from the manufacturer. Advantages for the customer include:

  • Monitoring people’s entry and exit.
  • Customized opening and closing of the door with an app designed for them.
  • Learning how the correct use of doors can reduce the business’ energy consumption.
  • User access to doors by managing registration, cell phones, etc., such as for loading trucks or messengers, without needing to use the remote control.
  • Standing out from the competition and connecting to Industry 4.0. Maximizing and simplifying the automatic management of doors with our IoT platform OpenGate.
